2012 Addy Awards

I was told by my professor to help volunteering at the 2012 Addy Awards, in result I will actually get to attend the event for free. The Addy awards is the basically the Oscar’s for advertising agencies. Until yesterday, I did not know that Memphis has this many advertising agencies!

The event was held at the historical Cadre Building located at the heart of downtown memphis. According to my professor each ticket for the event cost almost 80bucks! So I was really glad that I got to go for free, along with my three graphic design buddies. The Awards goes from Poster Design to Mix Media design, but seem like the agency Combustion won almost in every categories.  The agency I worked at last summer also won a award in one of the categories.

Well here some pics from last night. enjoy!

Here’ our group photo. This year moto was “Damn it feels good to a winner!”

The Secret World of Arrietty

Today I got the chance to catch the new studio Ghibli’s film titled “The Secret World of Arrietty”, thought it has been released in Japan since 2010, but here in the states we normally have to wait a year or two till gets release. Studio Ghibli has been producing some groundbreaking work over the years, including one of my most beloved animated film “Castle in the Sky”. Me and my friend ryan got to catch the 4:45 showing at my local cinema, to my surprise the entire theatre was packed! Mostly were little kids probably experiencing a studio ghibli film for the first time. Once the soundtrack started I know I was in for a treat, oh by the way the soundtrack for Arrriety is just gorgeous.

The film was based off the children books by Mary Norton, in which it describes this secret world of tiny people who lives in people houses, they are to survive by borrowing supplies from the human hence the term “Borrowers”. Arrietty and her family are the last borrowers that are living in the household of  Shawn; a boy who living at his aunt house mainly to find quiet place to rest before his treatment for his heart problem. The story dive into the relationship between Arriety and Shawn, the voice actors for the english version did a superb job of bringing the characters to life, normally I would prefer the orignal japanese dub with subtitles. I really love how the film opens it self up layer by layers, we are intrigue by the master storytelling of the events that leads to the final conclusion. I wouldn’t spoil any details about the plot, mainly I want you to experience the film yourself. In my opinion, I have to say this is a must see film for the new year of 2012.

There are so many wonderful films coming out this year, but the Hobbit in december is one film I am dying to see! So glad peter jackson is back again for the hobbit along with a exceptional cast. So take some time this week and check out The Secret World of Arrietty, I am pretty sure you wouldn’t regret it!

Bruce Wayne: The Night (Part 1 The logo)

During my Graphic Design 2 class, we spent the entire semester on the subject of corporate branding and how to built a successful campaign out of it. Our assignment was to build a Men’s Cologne out of a fictional character, in which I end up choosing Bruce Wayne as the character for my Cologne. For me, A cologne symbolize a high standard for Men, and in my opinion the perfect person to symbolize the rich and wealthy in the fictional world can be none other then Bruce Wayne.

Our first assignment was to design the logo for the cologne. My first inspiration was to look at the logo of many other cologne from brand names like C&K, Ralph Lauren, and many others. In logo design, the goal was to create a successful design that its easy to recognize, but it also at the same time that it can connect to the targeted audience. For Bruce Wayne, the first image that came to my mind was the Batman symbol that shines above the city of Gotham. So my first initial idea was that the logo well represent the Wayne’s Tower and that there are those huge night beams shines behind it it.

For my first concept design was to use the night beam to show the letter “W” which stands for Wayne, as dive more into the design I started to look into other aspect of the logo. I want the logo to built up from three different shapes or elements and form into one design that’s both balanced and well structured.

After numerous attempts, I got the advice from my instructor to add a little batman into the mix, since this cologne has somewhat a Dark Knight theme. I came up with collection of designs in my notebook. I tried many attempts to corporate the bat logo into the design, but all was disappointing in my view. Finally, I gave up the idea of the batman logo and thought to blend some other factor from batman.

The idea I came up with to just his cape instead, that in the shadowy night all you can see of him is his cape. With this insite came to my mind I went back to the drawing board and finally got the first draft for the design of the logo.

The first of my final designs, as you can see if you upside it still somewhat symbolize the night beam from my initial designs, but if you downwards you can make out batman cape as he taking a leap from buildings.

Here’s the final design in black and white

And the color version

After the logo was established we can slowly move on to the campaign itself. In my next few post I gonna share you everything from Poster Design to the design of the cologne bottle itself. So stay tune!

China Adventures: Shanghai House Restaurant

During my winter break, My family and I took a trip back to Shanghai to attend my uncle’s wedding, I told myself  that I will blog my experience once I get back. One of my new resolutions for 2012 was to undertake Food Photography, and I thought this trip will be the perfect opportunity  for me to dive in. Every time during my stay in Shanghai, my family will always try to experience the new restaurants that in recent years got a bit famous. The Restaurant business in shanghai grow tremendously in the recent years, as people tends to eat out more. A lot more. Almost every restaurant we went to needs to be reserve days ahead, and sometime weeks early. Our first stop was at the Shanghai House Restaurant (上海人家), it was located inside this gigantic mall, as from the name the place serves mostly traditional Shanghainese cuisines.

We ordered the usual Shanghainese dishes which includes Red Braised Pork, Spring Rolls, and many other tiny delicacy that is known from shanghai. Overall the experience and service was pretty decent and food was mostly delicious, thought i think they put just a bit too much sugar in some of the dishes. Enjoy the photos below.

More foodness in this coming week as I get all of my china photo sort it out.

My Little “Corner”

Everyone has their own work space with its own unique style. Sometime a work space can be the key aspect of a person work flow. The atmosphere helps them to get motivated and be inspired, as for me, it’s the warmth of the sun that gets my imagination running. So in this blog post I am going to share with y’all my little workspace I called “The Corner”.

I did some house cleaning before I took these pics, since most of time you can’t even see the keyboard when its cover with ocean of papers.

Here’s a little rundown of my gears
-Macbook Pro (Late 2008)
-Tron Razer Mouse / Apple Keyboard
-27′in Apple Cinema Display
-4TB of Backup Space

The table itself was from Office Max ages ago and little shelf on the side was part of my old TV set.  There two drawers below the desk in which where I kept my Wacom Tablet and bunch of useless junk or better term “Memories”.

My favorite time during the day is in the late afternoon. You can see from the windows the sun is slowly setting on the horizon . I normally pour my self of cup of tea and enjoy some classic from the Beatles.

Heres my four little treasures that I got as gifts from my good friends..except Danbo; that took me nearly 6 months to find. Danboard was a huge hit on the photo sharing community Flickr that nearly everyone I know got one and they all took extremely creative picture with it.   The little Goku was a farewell gift my good pal when I visited Japan in the summer of 2010,  and it also reminds me of how bad I wanna go back and visit Tokyo. The little golden cup is probably the only trophy I ever get in my life, and its from my friend’s Harry Potter party. The party was simply amazing and I was sorted into the Hufflepuff house. And lastly the black figuring is Tron AKA my obsession with the new film, the gift was also from a good friend of my.

So that’s it folks, hope you enjoy this little peak into my work follow.

The Nikon D800

On tuesday, Nikon has finally announced their successor to the D700, which was their entry level FX camera. It’s called the D800, and it has an unbelievable 36.3 megapixels sensor. I been waiting for this camera ever since I wanted to upgrade to a full frame from my current camera. My trusty old Nikon D80 has been with me for the past four years and has treated me well over the course of time. In result, I felt that I have pushed this camera to it’s limit and now it’s slow dying away. The rumors for the D800 was expected to be releasing mid of last year, but  due to the flooding of Thailand the manufacture came to  a complete stop.

Before I give my opinion for the camera here some of the listed specs

36.3 megapixel, full-frame sensor (FX)…. MOTHER OF GOD
up to 5fps still image shooting (FX mode is 4fps)
1080pHD video 24 or 30fps
ISO Range 100-6400 (extendable from 25,600)
Two card slots: CF and SD

My old D80 only had a 10.2 Megapixels CCD sensor and shots about 3fps in RAW, so if I am gonna upgrade to the new D800 it’s gonna be huge leap for me. At 36.2 megapixels the RAW files gonna be at least 70mb to 80mb big and when its converted to a TIFF files it can easily go over 200mb. At my current work flow any files over 50mb is already taking up a lot of my backup hard disc space, so at 200mb I will defiantly needs to invest in new drives to store all those images. Another problems I see from having such large files is that I don’t think my late 2008 Macbook Pro can handle the processing power, especially when it’s already connected to a 27in Cinema Display. Hopefully I will get a chance to download a sample RAW file and play around with it to see if my computer can handle such large files. Above all, I am very excited for this camera in term of the video option it offers; Nikon has finally an answer to the Canon’s 5DMII. I haven’t done any video on DSLR but I am excited that now we have option to use our own lens for video capturing.

There’s two model of the D800 one comes with AA filter and one doesn’t, I am not really sure on the matter of AA filter, but for me the regular version at $2999 will suit me just fine . The camera doesn’t expect to ship till late March and seem from difference sources pre-order has already seem to be filling up. Thought I am in no hurry  of getting the camera since my D80 still works pretty good. Once my local camera shop has one I will indeed test out the camera myself and see if its the right upgrade for me. One thing does bother me is that FPS went down from the D700, but I guess it’s due to the large sensor. I have hoped for a faster frame rate, since my friend’s Sony Alpha 850 can go up to 9FPS in JPEG.  I don’t do any sports photography so I think FPS won’t matter to me as much.

Most of my work consist of Landscape and Still Life, so the large sensor will defiantly benefit me in term of image quality. The current reviews says that the dynamic range is excellent in this camera, which really help for landscape photographers. I am really up for a upgrade this year to a full-frame camera, and I do hope that this D800 will be my savior.

Maple Glazed (Salted) Chicken

Cooking has never been my field of expertise and probably never will be, but that doesn’t mean I can stop from trying and having fun with it. Sometime experiments can lead to bad things or in my case today bad taste. Today a friend of mine and me did the “Maple Glazed Chicken” experiment for our lunch special. I printed the instructions from the food network website and below is what suppose to look like.

Here the ingredient to make the maple glazed chicken

  • 2 pounds skin-on, bone-in chicken breasts, cut into large chunks
  • Kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 apples (1 red, 1 green), cored and cut into wedges
  • 8 medium shallots, quartered lengthwise
  • 1/4 cup fresh sage, torn
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinega

As you can see the picture from food network look so health and tasty, but our end result can be a bit deceiving. When I read the instruction I got a bit confused when they wrote season the chicken with “salt”, for some ode reason my brain processed as to batter the chicken with salt. We did all the other steps correctly including cooking the chicken itself, which I surprise myself that we didn’t eat anything raw as I look my past cooking failures.

This was our finishing product. As you can see the chicken are cover with a think layer of black glaze, there are not burn mark but instead they are burned sea salt. We totally shock ourself of just how salty the chicken tasted, which follow three bottles of water afterwards. We had the chicken around noon time and I can still taste the salt in my mouth as of right now. One of my new year resolution was try to learn how to cook, and I guess this is my starting point. I hope I do get better as I gain more experience.

Website Update

It’s been a week since I been working on this new site, in which I am almost in done in term of uploading my Portfolio. The main focus was to combine my Blog and Portfolio into one site, so its lot easy to navigate and also to manage. I might just cancel my Cargo Collective account after I upload the rest of my graphic design work. I really like this new clean layout that I selected; its pleasing to the eye and also symbolize a bit of my personality.

The about me need a bit of update since I wrote that little intro about me almost 4years ago. I was thinking incorporating a store in the near future, so if people interested in buying prints that can do that right on the site. There are many other ideas I been planing for the site. So stay tune!
